The other day I was home with the girls and suddenly I heard something we all know is ominous: silence. I could hear Anna and Viva playing downstairs, but it was Tessa I worried about. She is taking after her older sister these days, doing highly destructive things and then disarming us with a smile.
Anyway, I suddenly realized she was missing. I called her name several times, and nothing.
Then I started getting nervous. I searched every room in the house. She was nowhere. I went out to the garage, hoping I’d find her there, but to no avail. Finally I went outside, praying I would hear her voice, my mind filled with images of brutal traffic accidents and kidnappings.
And then I remembered: the day before, she and I had been playing hide and seek together. And I had explained to her how the game really works. She wanted to tell me her hiding spots–she wasn’t getting what the game was about. But I told her that the secret to a good game of hide and seek was to hide where nobody knows where you are.
Suddenly, I knew what she was doing…
A little relieved, I searched the house, and not very long thereafter, I saw something strange in her bedroom. A pile of blankets that looked a little abnormal:
sounds like that scene in ET where he's hiding with all the stuffed animals! too cute 🙂
Lol, that was my first thought with the stuffed animals thing!
Nothing scarier than loosing a kid. Every minute feels like an hour.
Speaking of being freaked to the core, is it just me or do those Lalaloopsies spook you with their beady button eyes?
Ever since I saw the movie, "Coraline," and then those Lalaloopsy dolls came out, all I could think of was how the evil mother in the movie changed kids into dolls with button eyes. Creepy. So you're not alone there, BQ.
OMGoodness- what InkStained said! I always thought button-eyes were cute.. until Coraline! *shudder
Did I just commit my own pet peeve and type loosing? I meant losing. Seriously we need an edit feature.
Ha ha, that's hilarious! I dread the day my kids start doing that!
Funny kid. Some day these things will be hilarious beyond belief and not scary anymore…
Oh my gosh that is so funny!
that is so cute. the stuffed animals crack me up. one day the whole neighborhood was looking for my neighbors 5 year old boy. everywhere. finally after all of us going through the house and the neighborhood/ and everywhere close she called the police (after like an hour)
the police came about 30 min later (no rush for a missing kid right?!) and they insisted on starting in the house. they found him asleep wedged between the wall and the mattress with blankets piled on him. it made me think of that story- at least you were calm about it right ?! 🙂 i think tessa and maddie need to be BFFs
Oh my gosh this cracked me up! But yeah those few seconds of horrible images when you can't find your child is the worst ever! I love the stuffed animals one. My kiddo has to have ALL of her stuffed animals on her bed and we can never find her when we check up on her in the night. 🙂
My youngest once disappeared after getting put of the bathtub with her older sister. I sent them to their room to get dressed. frantically searched everywhere for her. The child locks on all the outside doors were still locked, and all the windows closed. I continued searching as I talked to the 911 dispatcher, and finally found her, under a pile of blankets, asleep on her bed. It took hours to calm back down.
Not that it matters, but on my web page I have an extremely long, boring-to-some-but-fascinating-to-others, scientific explanation for why you can feel people staring at you. Unfortunately, I don't have a scientific explanation for why the sensation gives you the creepy crawlies. But boy, does it ever. (If you want to read it, google for "zyzmog staring at me.")
Oh, yeah, the real reason I had intended to respond: my 4-y-o son hid like that in a houseboat in the middle of Lake Powell. THAT was freaky.
